Today there are many spearguns in different models, sizes, materials and shapes. But how do you know which one suits your style of fishing best? The most important thing: mobility and precision are what every passionate spearfisher looks for. That is why you have to think about the combination of the speargun's mass, the thickness of the bands and the thickness of the shaft. The more power you put into the gun, the thicker the shaft has to be, and the more accurate the shot becomes.
Here are different setups for the types of speargun most fishermen use: tube guns, 95/100 cm guns, double-band guns and rollers.
Tube spearguns
Because they are thin, it is best to fit 16 mm bands and a 6.5 mm shaft. Use a compact reel, 30 or 40 metres of 1.5 mm dyneema, so the gun drags less water when you move, creates less friction and is easier to swing.
95 or 100 cm spearguns
The most popular size. With a single band you get very versatile fishing: you can take fish from 1 to 20 kg, as long as the fish is close enough and the shaft has a good tip, because that gives you much more penetration if you meet a bigger fish.
Double band and roller
Double-band and roller spearguns are for more selective fishing of big fish; they are used a lot for aspetto on dentex and other open-water species. They are usually set up with double 16 mm bands and a 7.5 or 8 mm shaft, to gain range and get a long, powerful, accurate shot. Rollers are usually set up with a single 16 mm band, or 14 mm with a double pulley, a 7.5 or 8 mm shaft and a reel with enough capacity.
In short: be very clear about what you are looking for, and your fishing will be as comfortable as possible.

Today I build three wooden models, all to your length, from 90 to 120 cm:
- Inverter: made for the waiting hunt. You settle on the bottom, stay still, and the Inverter gives you the power and reach for that one shot.
- Deep: also suits the waiting hunt, but with more mobility. Easier to swing and to track the fish.
- Slim: the thinnest of the range, for fast hunting in the surf, where you have to move and aim in an instant.
